The core of the US position has been regime change and unconditional surrender, through the handover of uranium and the reopening of the Strait of Hormuz.

'We would much prefer a deal. If Iran is willing to give up the (nuclear) material it has and reopen the Strait of Hormuz, that's great. That's the goal. We don't want to have to take further military action.'
